In Their Shoes - Episode One

Documentary Seies | Episode One | 46m 45s |  2020  |  HD

In the heart of Kolkata's grand colonial architecture, rickshaw pullers wake up at 5 am to start their strenuous day in the dirty and narrow back streets. Working shoeless, they hope to make 100-150 rupees a day, delivering goods and passengers across the city until late evening. Barely covering their rental costs, they survive on cheap street food and send the rest to support their families in distant villages. But as the wealthier locals deem their work inhumane, and the government pushes for modernization, the future of this ancient profession is uncertain. Despite their struggles, the biggest dream of these rickshaw pullers is to continue pulling their rickshaws until the end of their lives, even as it marks the end of Kolkata's heritage and colonial treasure.
